Researchers have suggested that vitamin A helps to reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.
  • Zeaxanthin and Lutein: These plant compounds fall in the carotenoid family and can be found in both the retina and macula of your eye. Additional research is needed, but it’s been found that zeaxanthin and lutein are beneficial for improving vision, preventing cataracts, and slowing the progression of age-related macular degeneration.
  • Antioxidants: If there is an imbalance of free radicals in your body, then it results in oxidative stress that speeds up the aging process and damages cellular function. Many eye conditions can occur from oxidative stress, which is why it is important to get plenty of antioxidants to combat these free radicals. Vitamin E and Vitamin C are two notable antioxidants that are important for eye health. If you aren’t getting enough Vitamin E from seeds, nuts, leafy greens, and salmon, then a vitamin E supplement is a great option to consider. Vitamin C food sources include citrus fruits such as oranges, grapefruits, lemons, and limes.
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: This special type of polyunsaturated fat is essential for the cells in your retina. At the same time, omega-3’s help through their anti-inflammatory properties, which can decrease the risk of diabetic retinopathy.
  • B Vitamins: A variety of B Vitamins can play a role in your eye health. The key is to get the right combination of B Vitamins, which is why a supplement can be a simple solution. These vitamins have been found to reduce inflammation, which helps to decrease the risk of inflammation-related eye conditions (such as age-related macular degeneration).

Keep in mind that although nutrients are available in supplement form, often the best solution is to follow a healthy diet that provides the nutrients listed above. These nutrients won’t provide everything you need for good eyesight, but getting the right nutrients is important for building a strong foundation that prevents or slows the progression of common eye diseases.
